The All Clear design features a transparent polycarbonate bottom in addition to the transparent dome, providing 360-degree visibility of the desiccator interior. This allows you to monitor samples and desiccant from any angle, including from below. It is particularly useful when using color-changing desiccants that need visual monitoring, for teaching demonstrations, or when observing samples during drying processes.
The all-polycarbonate construction offers several advantages: it provides complete transparency throughout the entire desiccator, it is more robust and impact-resistant than the polypropylene base used in standard models, and it offers the same excellent chemical resistance. All other features—including the perforated disc, grease-sealed flanges, and ambient pressure design—are identical to our standard plain desiccators.
These all-clear plain desiccators are available in five diameters: 150mm (Code 55211), 200mm (Code 55212), 250mm (Code 55213), 300mm (Code 55218), and 380mm (Code 55219). The size refers to the internal diameter, which determines sample capacity and desiccant plate size.
Common desiccants include silica gel (with or without indicator), activated alumina, molecular sieves, calcium chloride, and calcium sulfate (Drierite). The choice depends on your application and the level of dryness required. The all-clear design makes it especially easy to monitor color-changing desiccants like indicating silica gel.
The thick perforated polypropylene disc serves two purposes: it provides a stable platform for sample dishes, crucibles, and containers, and its numerous tiny holes allow air circulation (air troughs) between the desiccant below and the samples above. The central hole makes it easy to lift and remove the disc for accessing or replacing desiccant.
Porcelain discs are recommended when working with incandescent crucibles or hot samples. The polypropylene disc may not withstand high temperatures, while porcelain can tolerate the heat. For routine storage of room-temperature samples, the included polypropylene disc is perfectly suitable.
The all-polycarbonate construction can withstand standard autoclaving temperatures (121-degree). However, repeated autoclaving may affect the material over time. For routine decontamination, cleaning with appropriate laboratory disinfectants is often sufficient. Remove the polypropylene disc before autoclaving, as it may have different temperature tolerances.
To create an effective moisture barrier, apply a thin, even layer of high-vacuum grease or desiccator grease to the ground flange surfaces of both the base and the dome. Place the dome on the base and rotate gently to distribute the grease evenly and create a clear, airtight seal. The all-clear design allows you to verify the seal visually.
These all-clear plain desiccators are supplied individually, with one piece per pack for all five sizes (55211 through 55219). This allows you to order exactly the size and quantity needed for your laboratory.
